RAPS Group Reports The RAPS Book Group met on November 17 at the home of Phyllis Leonard. The group has chosen David McCullough’s The Path Between the Seas: The Creation of the Panama Canal, 1870-1914 to read and discuss. A long book, it is divided into three sections which the author labels “books.” When we realized at the October meeting, how long the book was, and thought about the demands of the holiday season, we decided to read Books One and Two for November and Book Three for December. We had a lively discussion of the first two sections of the book. In the third part, construction of the canal begins. The story of the control of yellow fever and malaria is also part of the story of the construction of the canal. These are the topics we anticipate discussing at our meeting on December 15 at the new home of Maxine Thomas at Rose Villa, #3029, 13505 SE River Road, Portland. Let Maxine know if you plan to attend. You can reach her by phone at 503-652-3069 or by email at Thomasm@pdx.edu. Our January meeting will be at the Terwilliger Plaza home of Marge Terdal. We will be discussing Elizabeth Gilbert’s The Signature of All Things. The Book Group meets at 1:30 on the third Tuesday of every month. New members are always welcome. –Joan Shireman The RAPS Bridge Group will meet (or already has met) on Tuesday, December 1, 2015. We meet regularly on the first Tuesday of each month. Given the timing of the monthly RAPS Sheet, let me inform you of a couple of upcoming bridge sessions: January 5, 2016 and February 2, 2016. On December 1, we will gather in the Cascade Room (Room 236) of Smith Memorial Center at PSU. Playing begins at 1 pm and continues to about 4:30 pm. We are trying out Smith Center as a centrally located place to play bridge. The RAPS board has kindly offered to pay the room rent for our Bridge Group. We will see how the room fits our needs during this trial period. The RAPS Bridge Group is friendly and is always looking for new players. If you wish to join us, please contact Steve Brennan, 503-646-6297. My email address is the.steve.brennan@gmail.com. --Steve Brennan The RAPS Hiking Group completed its last hike of the year on November 13. Deve Swaim brought along her friend Halley, bringing the total to ten. We hiked from Terwilliger Plaza to the Casey Eye Clinic at OHSU, and took lots and lots of stairs to the Tram. Some took the elevator shortcut. From the lower tram station we walked a short distance to the Tilikum Crossing bridge, past the opera office and OMSI to the Vera Katz bronze statue where we cuddled up to her for a group picture. We returned across the Tilikum Crossing to the PSU/OSU/OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building where we had lunch. The December gathering is our annual potluck and 2016 hike planning session. The 2016 hike schedule will be posted on the RAPS Calendar and events web page by December 20. --Larry Sawyer 3

In Memoriam: Lily R. (Sakurai) Kajiwara, 1924 - 2015 ily Kajiwara was born July 26, 1924, in Portland, to Masaru Sakurai and Chiyoko (Takeuchi) Sakurai. She grew up, along with five younger siblings, on a farm in Troutdale, Oregon. She attended the nearby Corbett Grade and High Schools, graduating from the latter as the Valedictorian of her class in May 1942. Immediately thereafter, along with other Japanese Americans on the West Coast, she was sent to an internment camp, in her case, Camp Minidoka, in Hunt, Idaho. Initially, she was appointed to the teaching staff of the Elementary School there (as a recent graduate of high school). Shortly thereafter, she was appointed as the lone head teacher of her own classroom. At war's end, the family returned to the Portland area, where she married George Saburo Kajiwara, a veteran of the famous 442nd “Go for Broke” Regiment. Lily started taking classes at Portland State University. When she graduated with a major in anthropology, she was hired by the University to work in the PSU Library. For a long time, she worked in the Science Library, where she trained and managed the student work force. She took the course in the history of science so that she could develop a handbook for students having difficulty with the class. She was named "Outstanding Employee of the Year” in 1992. After retirement, she worked for the libraries of The Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, Providence Hospital, The Holgate Branch Library, The Oregon Buddhist Temple, and several others. She was preceded in death by one sibling, Betty Sakurai. She is survived by her husband, George Kajiwara; daughter, Karen Kajiwara; and three brothers, Dick Sakurai, George Sakurai, and Ed Sakurai. RAPS extends condolences to Lily Kajiwara’s family. --John R. Cooper, Professor Emeritus In Memoriam: Zola Grace Dunbar 1927-2015 ola Grace Dunbar née Thomas was born March 12, 1927, in Fossil, Oregon. She passed away Oct. 8, 2015, in Beaverton. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Oregon College, and a Master’s degree and Doctor of Education degree from the University of Oregon. She taught elementary school near LaGrande, in Albany, and at Raleigh Hills in Beaverton. She was named Beaverton's Teacher of the Year in 1974. Beginning in 1968, while working full time as an elementary teacher in the Beaverton School District, Zola also taught language arts and reading classes as an adjunct for the School of Education at Portland State. When she received her doctorate, she joined the faculty of the School of Education, where she directed the program in Teacher Education and Certification. She taught graduate and undergraduate courses in the teaching of reading to prospective elementary school teachers. She was the author of several published research studies on the teaching of reading. She was a member of a number of educational organizations, serving as president of five, including the Oregon branch of the International Reading Association.
