Branford Price Millar Award for Faculty Excellence Eileen M. Brennan EILEEN BRENNAN has demonstrated excellence during her 21 years at Portland State, particularly in the areas of scholarship, instruction, and dedication to quality education. Currently associate dean for academic and community affairs. Professor Brennan has been an administrator in the School of Social Work for 16 years. She continues to pursue research on work, early childhood, and family issues, contributing to the generation of knowledge in those fields, and linking her research to that of other national and international scholars. Professor Brennan’s research on the integration of work and family responsibilities by employed parents of children with mental health disorders increasingly receives international attention, and she collaborates with key researchers at the Sloan Foundation, Professor Brennan and researchers from Johns Hopkins and Georgetown universities have devised a means to assess outcomes of mental health consultation in early childhood settings and a comprehensive synthesis of current research on early childhood mental health consultation. Professor Brennan also co-wrote a guide for professionals supporting families of children with emotional or behavioral disorders (with colleague Julie Rosenzweig). Another project is expected to result in a training module for human resource professionals that will help them understand and accommodate the needs of working parents. Professor Brennan is a dedicated and respected teacher in the Social Work master’s and doctoral programs. She is one of the school’s most successful advisers of Ph.D. students. In addition, she has served on many PSU committees, including the Accreditation Committee, the President’s Diversity Action Council, Graduate Council, and numerous School of Social Work committees. She also is a member of national boards and several state and county policy groups, including Friends of the Children, Catholic Charities of Oregon, and Oregon’s Child Care Consortium, She is co-editor of the school’s bulletin, “Frontiers.” Professor Brennan’s impressive scholarly and research record, her dedication to high quality education, and the passion and commitment she brings to University and community service constitute the very qualities embodied in the Branford Price Millar Award. The Millar Award is given annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship. University service, and public service, and whose performance in the area of scholarship and research is judged to be exceptional—values recognized by the late Branford P. Millar, a distinguished president of the University. 10
