Kulongoski Governor Today is your special day, and your family, your neighbors, and your city are deeply proud of you. Portland State University holds a unique place in our community, and its graduates have always been at the center of making Portland a great city. In the years ahead, I know you will put your talent and compassion, skills and intellect into shaping Portland’s future. Congratulations. Tom Potter Mayor As I look at the many accomplishments of those upon whom we confer degrees this year, I am struck by their richness and their remarkable variety—some among you have studied the most minute structures we know, as well as the largest. Collectively your work has carried you to the furthest reaches of our world community, and yet touched upon themes vitally important to our own metropolitan area. In your individual work you have devoted energy, meticulous care, and effort to the mastery of your subject matter. Such achievements are truly worthy of respect. Throughout your time at the University, you have been an important part of our community, and I hope that as you take your degree, you will not forget that community. On behalf of the University, let me extend to you my warmest congratulations. Michael F. Reardon Interim President 1

Student Speaker Tamam WC TAMAM W. WARITU will receive his Bachelor of Arts in international studies and black studies with a minor in sociology and civic leadership. He was born and raised in East Africa, Ethiopia, and has lived in Portland for eight years. Mr. Waritu is a McNair Scholar and serves as president of the Gadab Foundation, a nonprofit organization he started two years ago to award scholarships to students in his hometown. While earning his degree, Mr. Waritu held an internship at the Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine in the Office of Diversity Affairs. He has served as a mentor for low-income middle and high school students in the GEAR UP program. Mr. Waritu has also been actively involved in the Portland State community. He is a student employee in the Office of Admissions and has been part of the Student Recruitment Team, working with admissions counselors to help recruit diverse populations of students to Portland State. He has served as a student senator, and has been a treasurer for the NAACP Chapter at PSU. He briefly served in the Student Leaders for Service program and has been a member of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society. He is a recipient of the Portland State University Diversity Recognition Scholarship, Black United Fund of Oregon Scholarship, and President’s Award for Outstanding Community Engagement. This fall, Mr. Waritu will begin work on his master’s degree in the Graduate School of Education at Portland State. Following that, he plans to pursue a Ph.D. in educational leadership, administration, and policy and eventually become a college professor. Mr. Waritu says that he owes his success to his family and friends as well as to his professors and mentors. He thanks his co-workers at the Office of Admissions, particularly Linda Etter, for being so supportive. 7
Commencement Address Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa Richard Pimentel Richard Pimentel is a storyteller whose tales have helped change a country’s attitude toward the disabled. Mr. Pimentel gives personal accounts of injustice in his motivational speeches and professional training programs for employers. His stories inspire people to let go of their stereotypes and embrace diversity. He was a major player in formulating the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Emancipation Proclamation for the disabled community. When the act was signed into law in 1990, the chair of the U.S Equal Opportunity Commission publicly thanked Mr. Pimentel for educating employers on disability issues. Mr. Pimentel’s nationally renowned expertise on hiring and working with people with disabilities started when he was a student at Portland State in the 1970s, but this came after a failed first attempt to attend PSU. Following graduation from Jefferson High School as a speech champion, Richard enrolled at PSU with the intention of studying under the late Ben Padrow, professor of speech communication. He thought he was a shoe-in for the professor’s program. Instead, Prof. Padrow told him to come back when he had “something to say.” Following Prof. Padrow’s advice, Richard quit school and went off to fight in Vietnam where, within months, a mortar attack left him almost completely deaf. He returned to Portland State in 1970, and this time with Prof. Padrow’s backing, secured a rehab grant from the Veterans Administration to pay his full tuition, room, and board. Richard figured he was on his way to a lucrative career in the corporate world when he met PSU student Art Honeyman, whom he describes as “the smartest and funniest man I have ever known.” Art, who earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from PSU, has severe cerebral palsy. He is hard to understand, but as fate would have it. Art’s voice was a perfect match to Richard’s limited hearing. The two became good friends and formed an even deeper bond over an unjust experience they shared. Late one night at a Portland restaurant, the waitress refused to serve them and threatened to call the police because she deemed Art the “ugliest, most disgusting thing” she had ever seen. 8
Commencement Address “I was stunned, and didn’t know what to say,” remembers Richard. “Then Art turned to me and said, ‘Why is the waitress talking about you this way? I don’t think you look any worse than you usually do.’” The pair refused to leave and were arrested under the “Ugly Law,” which until the mid-1970s allowed the arrest of anyone in public who was considered so “maimed, mutilated, or diseased” that their appearance was upsetting. This injustice propelled Richard headlong into the nascent disability movement. As a PSU class project, he asked US Bank and Tektronix if he could train supervisors on disability issues to see if it would improve employment rates for disabled people. It did, significantly, and Richard found his true calling. * * * Using his own training programs, Mr. Pimentel has spent the past 30 years educating tens of thousands of managers and workers. Government agencies and Fortune 500 companies acknowledge his programs as a breakthrough for disabled people in the workplace, including those with AIDS. He also conducts training and consults nationwide on topics as diverse as attitudinal change in health and human services, motivation of individuals with employment barriers, the future of disability management, return-to- work issues, and emotional ergonomics. He has authored and co-authored numerous books and professional publications, including Developing the New Employee, What Managers and Supervisors Need to Know About the ADA, and Taking Control of Workers Compensation Disability Costs. Music Within, a major motion picture of Mr. Pimentel’s life story staring Ron Livingston and Michael Sheen, was released in 2007 and is now available on DVD. Much of the movie was filmed on the Portland State campus. Today, Mr. Pimentel is designing a fresh training program for employers of disabled Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. For improving the lives of disabled people across the country, Portland State University is honored to award Richard Pimentel the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters and have him deliver the 2008 Commencement address. 9
Branford Price Millar Award for Faculty Excellence Eileen M. Brennan EILEEN BRENNAN has demonstrated excellence during her 21 years at Portland State, particularly in the areas of scholarship, instruction, and dedication to quality education. Currently associate dean for academic and community affairs. Professor Brennan has been an administrator in the School of Social Work for 16 years. She continues to pursue research on work, early childhood, and family issues, contributing to the generation of knowledge in those fields, and linking her research to that of other national and international scholars. Professor Brennan’s research on the integration of work and family responsibilities by employed parents of children with mental health disorders increasingly receives international attention, and she collaborates with key researchers at the Sloan Foundation, Professor Brennan and researchers from Johns Hopkins and Georgetown universities have devised a means to assess outcomes of mental health consultation in early childhood settings and a comprehensive synthesis of current research on early childhood mental health consultation. Professor Brennan also co-wrote a guide for professionals supporting families of children with emotional or behavioral disorders (with colleague Julie Rosenzweig). Another project is expected to result in a training module for human resource professionals that will help them understand and accommodate the needs of working parents. Professor Brennan is a dedicated and respected teacher in the Social Work master’s and doctoral programs. She is one of the school’s most successful advisers of Ph.D. students. In addition, she has served on many PSU committees, including the Accreditation Committee, the President’s Diversity Action Council, Graduate Council, and numerous School of Social Work committees. He often addresses community members, federal agencies, and media on important social aspects of the Middle East. He has written 32 publications, including three books. This expertise positioned him to lead PSU’s Middle East studies program and become director of the Middle East Studies Center (1987-1995). Professor Farr’s impeccable service record and leadership skills reveal a staggering level of University citizenship. In the words of his supporters: “Grant’s loyalty to Portland State and its values, and his unwavering dedication to his students form the very heart of his identity as a professional and as a human being.” The Hoffmann Award is given annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished contributions to the University in the areas of instruction. University service, and scholarship—done in the spirit of humanism, civility, and collegiality— with particular dedication to students and loyalty to the University. Portland State University Oregon’s largest and most diverse public university is a center of opportunity for 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Located in Portland, Oregon, one of the nation’s most livable cities, the University’s innovative approach to education combines academic rigor in the classroom with community-based internships and projects. It serves as a catalyst to the six-county metropolitan area’s economic and cultural vitality and a gateway to international understanding and development. Established in 1946 to meet the educational needs of GIs home from World War II battlefields, the school found its first home in a former federal housing project in North Portland known as Vanport. The campus moved to Lincoln Hall in Portland’s South Park Blocks in 1952. Since then, it has grown to embrace almost 50 city blocks, retaining a park-like beauty within its urban setting. Recognized for its academic strength, Portland State has received national awards for its distinctive approach to teaching, learning, and service. Its faculty conducts research that addresses some of society’s most perplexing challenges and offers promising solutions. With 125 degree programs, the University offers both breadth and depth for scholarly pursuits. Also, its extracurricular opportunities provide students a wide arena for personal growth and life-long community connections. Green is more than our school color, it’s our school spirit. Portland State strives to harness the strengths of the University with new ideas. innovative partnerships, and academic rigor. Working with like-minded sustainable businesses, individuals, and organizations, faculty and students are performing valuable research on alternative energy sources such as solar panels; aggressive waste reduction and recycling programs; and sustainable building practices. Armed with this knowledge and experience, our students will join a generation of leaders building a more sustainable world, one idea at a time. At Portland State, the motto “Let Knowledge Serve the City” is its mission, a reminder of its past, and a roadmap for the University’s future. Vision, Mission, Values, and Priorities Our vision is to be an internationally recognized urban university known for excellence in student learning, innovative research, and community engagement that contributes to the economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and quality of life in the Portland region and beyond. The mission of Portland State University is to enhance the intellectual, social, cultural, and economic qualities of urban life by providing access throughout the life span to a quality liberal education for undergraduates and an appropriate array of professional and graduate programs especially relevant to metropolitan areas. The University conducts research and community service that support a high quality educational environment and reflect issues important to the region. It actively promotes the development of a network of educational institutions to serve the community. Portland State values learning and discovery, access to learning, a climate of mutual respect, openness and reflection, and community and civic engagement. Engagement among faculty, students, and the community contributes to learning and scholarship that is globally relevant and regionally focused. Sustainability is our selected programmatic focus. The following priorities guide our efforts and direct our resources: ■ Improve student success through engaged learning experiences. • Enhance educational opportunity in the Portland metropolitan region. ■ Expand innovative scholarship and creative activities that address regional issues and have global significance. 16
Academic Costume One of the most colorful features of the academic procession is the appearance of graduates, faculty, members of the Oregon University System, and guests of the University in full academic costume. The design of the gown, the color of the tassel on the cap, and the pattern, length, and colors of the hood all have long histories and special significance. American universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a standard code of academic costume. According to the code, the bachelors gown worn by Portland State University graduating seniors has straight sleeves and is worn closed. Gold and silver cords are worn by honors graduates. The master’s gown has long, pointed sleeves with the forearm being seen through a slit at the elbow of the sleeves. The doctor’s gown is faced with velvet and has bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet. The tassel on the cap indicates by color the college or school conferring the degree. In addition to the cap and gown, candidates for advanced degrees wear the academic hood, the traditional garment signifying high scholarly attainment. The doctoral hood carries the colors of the college or school conferring the degree on the outside and PSU’s colors of green and white on the inside. One legend, which deals with the origin of the cap and gown, reveals that a venerable teacher in ancient Greece promised wealthy parents that their sons would be “appropriately dressed” when presented at a banquet honoring the completion of their academic studies. However, when the young men entered the banquet hall dressed in simple sackcloth robes and carrying mortar boards, the mark of common workmen, a startled cry arose from the audience. “Let me explain,” said the teacher as he raised his hands for silence. “Your sons are dressed in clothing of the mason, for their destiny is to build. Some will build cities, some will build lives—perhaps one of them may even build an empire. But all will be builders on the solid foundation of knowledge.” Bachelor and Tassel / Hood Master Degrees Color Liberal Arts and Sciences Arts White Sciences Gold Business Administration Drab Education Light Blue Engineering Orange Fine and Performing Arts Brown Music Pink Social Work Citron Urban and Public Affairs Peacock Blue Public Health Salmon Pink Doctoral Degrees Tassel / Hood Color Doctor of Philosophy Dark Blue Hood Gold Tassel Doctor of Education Light Blue Hood Gold Tassel 17
