Survey Inside—P/ease Pull Out^, FIRST ANNUAL . ^QUALITY OF LIFE FESTIVAL / n the bitterest part of the winter, the Northwest Coast Indians gathered to share legends, myths and visions of the future. It was a time for rekindling the flame, for examining failures as well as success, a time for rebirthing the spirit. As a provincial corner of our own immense nation, we’re prone to boasting our merits without taking the diversity of life here fully into account. As our region emerges on the world stage, we’re overdue an annual reckoning, a chance to celebrate our successes while coming to terms with our flaws. The Quality of Life Festival is an effort to honor and nurture unselfish contributions to our region. The event will recognize excellence which enhances the quality of life in the Northwest for all of us. We envision the establishment of an ongoing tradition: awards that define a style and vision for our region. While many people and organizations are constantly in the public eye, other exemplary efforts are rarely heralded except by colleagues or in their home communities. To date no regular forum exists to bring forward the efforts and accomplishments of the range of people working to make this “far corner” a source of real pride for all who live here. WE WANT YOUR NOMINATIONS! ominations are currently being solicited. The proposed categories are listed below. In consideration for a Quality of Life award, individuals and institutions will be evaluated both for their special projects and for the overall impact they have on the region, its social and environmental well-being. Of particular import will be efforts to develop and enunciate a vision for our region in the context of the nation and world beyond. Ifwe find nominations that beg for a new category, or find too few nominees for an announced category, adjustments will be made. Final selection will be made by the Festival staff. The Spring 1 9 8 9 Clinton St. Quarterly will list and describe the nominees. Winners will be announced later in 19 8 9 . Whether the person or institution is little-known or world-renowned, being nominated for or receiving a Quality of Life award will in time become a singular distinction. Judges and sponsors of the Festival will be honored by their participation and will not be considered for this first year’s awards. QUALITY OF LIFE FESTIVAL AWARD CATEGORIES 1. Government 1A.
