Page 8 The Oregon Advance/TIMES February 29, 1968 Black History A Story of Uprisings by Charlotte Rutherford Virginia in 1800 was the site of an uprising led by Gabriel Prosser, Several thousand armed slaves were ready to take Richmond and, hopefully, the rest of Virginia. They were betrayed by two "loyal" slaves but even be– fore they could start their crusade a flood washed out bridges and roads. They postponed the attack but Gabriel and 34 of his men were captured and hanged be– fore they had an opportunity to begin. Denmark Vesey, a slave who had purchased his freedom, dedicated his life to freeing his Black brothers and sisters, He agitated the Negroes of South Carolina for five years and then began organizing. An estimated 9,000 Black men were involved in an intricately organized plot. After several months of planning, only a few days from the destined day, the plot was revealed by a house slave. Vesey and his top men were all arrested and hanged, All died without revealing any information. Nat Turner's plot was carried out. Nat Turner, called the Prophet, was con– vinced that he had been called by God to lead the Afro– American out of slavery, Various signs told him when The Day had arrived, He gathered four followers and began planning. On Aug, 21, 1831, Nat and seven followers began by killing all in the house of Nat's master. Within 24 hours his ranks had grown to 70 men and 57 whites were dead, Nat's men were evenwally defeated and dispersed. In the swamps he was able to elude capture for two months. During that time hundreds of smiling and non-smiling Negroes were burned, tor– tured, shot and lynched. Nat Turner in Virginia, coupled with Toussaint L'Overwre in Haiti, created such fear in the white man that periodically Black men would be picked at random and killed to dis– courage other insurrections. Rumors of plots brought white citizens into the ghettoes to terrorize, The image of the happy, carefree slave welcoming the "massa" home from the war is being slowly destroyed, The true image of an un– satisfied militant two-faced Black man is becoming known, I hope more Negroes will recognize their ancestry of struggle and join other in– formed Black brothers and sisters in helping to end op– pression. Once we as a race stop accepting the white man's stereotypes of us as a race, our generation will be able to produce Toussaint L'Ou– vertures that will free us into a workable society that practices what it preaches.
