Lengua 6.6: Subjunctive with expressions of doubt In Lengua 6.4, we saw that the subjunctive mood is often used with verbs of will or influence in sentences such as this: Los activistas quieren que la gente escuche su mensaje. In this section, we will explore another common use of the subjunctive: in expressions of doubt. Con- ceptually, this use is similar to the first in that it expresses something that might not be real. In the sen- tence above, the people may not listen; the activists simply want for that to happen. Similarly, the broad guidelines for expressions of doubt indicate that we need to use the subjunctive when there is doubt about whether something is true or real. Luckily, the guidelines are more concrete than that. Briefly, these are the steps to form the subjunctive in the present tense: 1. Begin with the present indicative first person singular conjugation (the yo form). 2. Next, drop the -o . 3. Finally, add the appropriate endings according to the chart below.
