Lengua 6.4: Subjunctive with verbs of will and influence One of the most common uses of the subjunctive mood is in clauses that express something that isn’t real. One reason it might not be real is because it’s what someone wants to happen or needs to happen. We can group these instances together and give a general guideline that verbs of will and influence trig- ger the subjunctive mood. Before continuing, however, it’s very important to note that this also requires a change of subject. If I want for myself to dance, I can simply use the infinitive: “Quiero bailar.” If she needs for herself to study, then “Necesita estudiar.” We only need the subjunctive in these situations if there is a change in subject. Let’s look at this sentence as an example: “I want you to study.” Who wants? I do. Quiero . Who studies? You do. Estudias . We combine these clauses with que : “Quiero que estudias.”
