382 • Chapter 5: Nuestro pasado In the preterite tense, there are no stem changes for -ar or -er verbs: Yo record é Tú record aste Ella, él, usted record ó Nosotras, nosotros record amos Ellas, ellos, ustedes record aron In the preterite tense, only stem-changing -ir verbs will undergo a stem change. However, the pattern is different, and the stem change itself can be different. In preterite tense, there is only a stem change in the third person forms: Yo ped í Tú ped iste Ella, él, usted pid ió Nosotras, nosotros ped imos Ellas, ellos, ustedes pid ieron Additionally, the only possible stem changes in the preterite are (o:u) and (e:i). This means that the verbs in the -ir list above whose present tense stem changes indicate (o:ue) will have the stem change of (o:u) in the preterite. Similarly, the verbs in the -ir list above whose present tense stem changes indicate (e:ie) will have the stem change of (e:i) in the preterite. Let’s look at dormir as an example of all of these patterns: Present tense: dormir (o:ue) Preterite tense: dormir (o:u) Yo duermo dormí Tú duermes dormiste Ella duerme durmió Nosotras dormimos dormimos Ellas duermen durmieron Remember that the verb endings are determined by the subject and tense and whether it is an -ar , -er , or -ir verb. 15.
