Module B: Sharing cultures  • 217 Lengua 3.4:Verbs with irregular yo forms At this point, we have looked at the conjugation of regular verbs in the present tense as well as a few irregulars, such as ser , estar , and ir . We have also looked at the conjugation of stem-changing verbs in the present tense, such as querer and preferir . We have even seen verbs like tener and decir , which fol- low the stem-changing pattern but also have an irregular first person singular ( yo ) form. There are many verbs whose conjugation pattern is regular with the exception of the yo form. Here is a list of the most common ones: Infinitive Translation Yo form Conocer To know Conozco Parecer To seem Parezco Aparecer To appear Aparezco Reconocer To recognize Reconozco Salir To leave, to go out Salgo Poner To put, to set Pongo Disponer de To have available Dispongo de Escoger To choose Escojo Dirigir To direct Dirijo Traer To bring Traigo Ver To see Veo Saber To know Sé Hacer To do, to make Hago If it seems daunting to memorize the entire list, you may find it helpful to group the verbs. 1. Most of the verbs ending in -cer have the same irregularity, with a yo form ending in -zco . (The exception is hacer .) 2. Salir and poner both follow the same pattern, with -go . Any verb that has poner as its stem (such as disponer ) will have the same irregularities as the verb poner . 3. Dirigir and escoger both need a spelling change to -jo in order to maintain the pronunciation of the verb stem. This will be true of any verb ending in -gir or -ger . Remember that all of these verbs will follow the regular conjugation patterns for all subjects other than the yo form: yo hago , tú haces ; yo parezco , tú pareces ; yo escojo , tú escoges . 32. La conjugación Fill in the chart below with the correct present tense forms of the verbs. Remember that there are differences in conjugation rules for -ar , -er , and -ir verbs.
