Module D: Social identities and community values  • 163 Lengua 2.8: Expressions with the infinitive 1 The infinitive is the unconjugated form of a verb. It usually translates to English as “to do something.” Hablar is “to speak,” for example. There are many expressions that involve infinitive verbs, and they can be extremely useful because they provide a way to use a familiar structure with any unfamiliar verb. One expression we have already seen is with querer . “Quiero hablar” means “I want to speak.” Note that quiero is conjugated, but hablar is still in the infinitive. We can change the conjugation of querer to indicate that someone else wants to speak, but we do not need to make any changes to hablar : ¿Quieres hablar? Quieren hablar. No queremos hablar. We can use this same expression with any logical verb without conjugating it: “¿A qué hora quieres comen- zar la clase?” The verb comenzar means “to begin,” and it is a stem-changing verb. By using an expression with the infinitive, though, we can avoid having to conjugate comenzar . Here are more common expressions with the infinitive. Gustar To be pleasing Me gusta imaginar que voy a viajar pronto. Esperar To hope/expect (w/inf.) ¿Esperas empezar el programa este mes? Necesitar To need Necesitan mejorar las condiciones. These generally do not translate into English, and we need to memorize that these expressions have prepositions.
