HOWTO SAY“BOTH” IN RUSSIAN You have probably encountered several different Russian expressions that are all translated into English identically as “both.”These include оба / обе, и тот и другой, и то и другое and sometimes even и так и так or и там и там . Here are some suggestions on how to use these constructions. The word оба refers to two nouns, one of which is masculine, while обе refers to two feminine nouns. Oба / обе can either follow the personal pronoun они , as in (a), stand on its own as in (b), or precede a noun, as in (c). The most straightforward usage of the word is when it denotes two people treated as a group: People, i.e., countable nouns (a) Имена Петьки и Чапаева знакомы всем в России. Они оба стали героями анекдотов. The names of Petka (masc.) and Chapaev (masc.) are known to everyone in Russia. They both became characters in jokes. (b) И Марина Цветаева, и Зинаида Гиппиус эмигрировали из России после революции. Обе печатались в журнале «Современные записки». Both Marina Tsvetaeva (fem.) and Zinaida Gippius (fem.) emigrated from Russia after the revolution. Both were published in the journal Contemporary Notes . (c) Оба персонажа (masc.) стали героями фольклора. Both characters became folkloric.
