(a) Type 1: Threat or warning A то can be used as a conjunction expressing a threat or warning about negative consequences. It can be translated as “otherwise / or else.” In this case, the verb that follows а то would be in the future tense. Мама сказала сыну: «Не прыгай на кровати, а то упадешь». The mother said to her son: “Don’t jump on the bed, or you’ll fall.” Paraphrase: Мама сказала сыну: «Если ты будешь прыгать на кровати, (то) ты упадешь». (b) Type 2: “Because” + complaint or regret The phrase а то can be synonymous with “because”when the subordinate clause following it expresses a complaint or regret.
