D E C O D I N G T H E 2 0 S 9 4 (b) Narrative inversion (Babyonyshev 1996, Ianko 2001) [VS……………......] Russian oral or oral-like narratives, folklore, and jokes often display VS word order, whereby the verb appears sentence-initially, and the subject appears in the middle of the sentence or clause. In this instance, inversion does not signify the introduction of new information. Rather, VS order creates a special “cohesive” flavor to the narrative, signaling to the listener that they should pay particular attention to actions (i.e., verbs) in the story and link them together. In the sentence below – a typical opening of numerous Russian jokes about a boy named “Vovochka” – the character, despite coming after the verb, is undoubtedly already known to listeners: Приходит Вовочка домой и говорит ... (VS words order; S is old info). So Vovochka comes home and says… Укажите порядок слов в предложении – SV или VS.
