Putting Around "It was a better year, but not as good as expected," said PSU golf coach Eric Stinson. "We're continuing to build the program. We've got three outstanding young players." "On a positive note, we were ranked 15th for half of the spring, the highest in 22 years. We were snowed out in Nevada, blown away by 75 mph winds in Hawaii, and almost rained away in California [Turlock]." Dan Kempken, a junior from Everett Washington, won the District championship with the best average for the three district tournaments. Kempken won the Hawaii title and placed in the top five in six out of 10 tournaments. Darin Danekas, a sophomore from Ritzville, WA, won the University of Portland invi tational, the fifth consecutive year a PSU golfer has claimed the tournament. Danekas also was just one stroke behind Stanford star Tiger Woods to finish fifth in the University of Oregon tournament. In a 19- team Division 1 field, PSU placed ninth, beating USC and UCLA. "We proved that we can play competitively with Division I schools," Stinson said. Story Courtesy ofSports Dept. 85
