Overturning Records The Portland State Track and Field team had a very successful season. Their success continued throughout the National Championships. Portland State's Robin Unger came through on the second day of competition to win the NCAA II Championship in the heptathlon May 26, at Emporia (KS) State. As a team Portland State men placed 17th out of 46 competing, while the women were 21st out of 49 competing. St. Augustine's won the men's title and Abilene Christian won the women's title. Unger, who placed fourth last year to earn All-American honors in the heptathlon, had a personal best performance in the 800 meters and a near record in the long jump for PSU to seal her victory. Unger's total of 5,162 points beat second- place finisher Clarissa Moulton of Cal State-Bakersfield, who had an even 5,000 points. Unger also set a new PSU record, and beat her previous best of 5,012 points. Senior decathlete Ron Foster was in the thick of the race for the decathlon championship. In fourth place after Thursday, Foster held the lead following the javelin throw on Friday. He finished third with a school record of 7,120 points to earn All-Ajnerican honors. Three other Vikings earned All-American honors. Junior Andy Maris placed fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:32:39. Senior Mike Mahoney was sixth in the 1,500 meters. His time of 3:47:03 was a personal record and one-tenth of a second shy of a school record. School record holder Dave Island, a junior, placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 220'0".
