Leading The Way The Portland State University men's soccer team had a season full of ups and downs. Although PSU finished the year with a 4-11-3 record, the numbers are deceiving. In 6 of their 19 games, PSU lost by a one-goal margin. To open the season, PSU knocked off seventh-ranked Regis University, 3-1 in a tournament in Seattle. The Vikings also played the defending national champions, Seattle Pacific University, to a thrilling overtime 3-3 tie. "This game was an incredible one to watch," said Head Coach Bernie Fagan. "Both teams played tough and neither was willing to give in." The scoring was evenly distributed as sophomore Zach Chown and senior Motonori Yoshimura tied as the leading scorers with four goals apiece. Sophomores Zac Marfell and Jeremy Martin were behind the leaders with three each. Jon Willman led the Vikings with six assists. Junior goalkeeper Dave Burleson played in every minute of all 19 games for PSU. Burleson made 132 saves, while recording two shutouts and a 2.31 GAA. Story Courtesy ofSports Dept. Keeping Score The Portland State womens soccer team wrapped up their season with an 8-8-3 record. The Vikings fielded a young squad, with 14 of 18 players being freshmen and sopho­ mores. PSU was unstoppable as they finished the season undefeated at home. In the final game of the season, the Vikings knocked off seventh-ranked Willamette University, 1-0. Millette DeSpain led PSU's offensive attack by scoring nine goals and adding three assists. Freshman Megan Wolcott lead the team with six assists, while also grabbing four goals. Sophomore goalkeeper, Krista Hokanson, played in every minute of every game in the net for the Vikings. Hokanson made 152 saves while recording 8 shutouts and a 1.79 GAA.
