Monday, Aug. 25,1993 New York City Associated Press Rahman was charged with commanding "a war of urban terrorism” in New York City, he was already one of the most unpopular figures in the U.S. The indictment accused him of being the mastermind of a plot to blow up the World Trade Center, which was bombed on Feb. 26, as well as other targets in N.Y. that were never hit, including the United Nations building and the Lincoln Tunnel. The blind cleric, in exile from his native Egypt, denounced the bombing and denied involvement in the alleged conspiracies. But he surrendered following a tense standoff outside a Brooklyn mosque.
