DISAPPOINTING YEAR; FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHTER I t was a disappointing year for the PSU baseball team, don't let the 29 total vic– tories fool you. Yes, it was Jack Dunn's seventeenth straight season of maintain– ing a winning record . Yes, the Vikings did start out the season on a high note with eight straight victories. Yet all would agree it could have been a whole lot better. All is not lost however. The Vikings two best players will be back next season to have another go of it. The play of Mark Peterson was a high light of this campaign and a good reason for high hopes in the next one. The junior southpaw from C lin– ton, Washington was 7-4 with a 2.11 ERA in 94 innings of work, striking out 63 with only 15 walks and is tied for fourth all-time in wins as a Viking with a career mark of 26-12 and is fifth with 290 innings pitched. He also was a terror at the plate displaying clutch hitting and stellar de– fensive play at first base. His accomplishments earned him pitcher of the week three times and player of the week three times as well in the PAC 10. Dane Walker was his usual rock solid self. In a perhaps undue comparison Walker numbers had slipped slightly from his record setting 1990 Play– er of the Year accomplishments. Walker still lead the team in nearly every offensive category. He had a .341 batting average, 63 hits, 12 doubles, 19 stolen bases and tied for the team lead in RBI's with 34. It was a long season for the Vikings, but what of the future? It clearly rests solely on the shoul– ders of these two individuals. • • •Ton y Ruzicka BASEBALL SCOREBOARD DATE> 2/19 2/21 2/22 2/23 2/24 2/25 2/26 2/27 2/28 3/5 3/7 3/8 3/8 3/9 3/9 3/15 3/16 3/17 3/22 3/23 3/24 ..... 3/25 3/26 3/27 3-30 4/3 4/6 4/9 4/10 4/ 13 4/14 4/17 4/20 4/21 4/~~]lll' 4/2'P . 4/28 4/30< 5/1 5/3 5/4 5/6 5/7 5/10 5/11 5/14-4 9 OPP University of Portland Western Oregon Concordia Willomette Eastern Oregon Pacific University Coqsordio UniVersity of Portland George Fo~ Utiversity of Portland Lewis & Clark Slate Col~e of Idaho ull~eld Canadian Notion ol Team Wb$1\ington Stole Western Oregon Oregon Stole Oregon Stole Davidson Huwaii·Hilo¥r Washington State ~~gn,lo Slate Wichita Stirte Washington State Lewis~Ciark State OrR9on Univer land George fox Washington Washington Western Oregon Gamago Washington State L.Mis & Clark YlciShingtonw Wohington Oregon Tedi George Fox WoshingtDf Stahl Gomoga Canadian Hotionob Concordia Tit University of Portland Qregon Stole ......
