INEXPERIENCED TEAM STRUGGLES THROUGH T he inexperienced PSU women's tennis team struggled through a long season finishing at 3- 14 mark. Tqe seven member team roster was dominated with fi ve freshmen. The teams three victori es came against the University of Portland , and Ore– gon State University on two separate occa– sions. They suffered through a drought in the middle of the season losing eight in a row at one point in time. To make matters worse they were forced into defaulting two separate times due to hav ing only five play– ers available. It was a difficult tiring cam– pa ign to say the least. Top seed Tomoko lchiyama from Osaka, Japan was a disappointing 5-13 for the campaign . In fact no member of the squad had a record above .500 in either sin– gle or doubles play. The second seed Jennifer Cordon from Laguna Niguel, California came into the barn with a 5-l 0 mark. Third seed Shelley Smith from Bend Oregon gath– ered the most singles wins with seven yet al– so lost 10. Doubles play was not much better. The team Jennife r Cordon and Shelley Smith had the best mark with a 5-8 record. Despite this season's difficulties, the team will have no one graduate this year and it is hoped that all players on the roster will return for another year of necessary season– ing. Only time will tell if it was a learning experience. • • •Tony Ruzicka Photo by Deborah Hallick Above: Head coach Shaun Ball watches his players as he talks to a fan during a spring time tournament.
