KRISTIN JACOBS: HIGHLY -DECORATED ATHLETE E very bedroom in America has within its boundaries some type of trophy, plaque or cer– tificate whether it be from swimming, bowling or perhaps Little League baseball. There is something to be _ proud of, placed in a location of prominence, something to Show your friends and children. Yet for Portland State softball pitcher Kristin Jacobs the walls and sllelves afen't big enough. They have been placed in b¢xes for safe keep– ing... a long time ago. This has become one high– ly decorated athlete. Her awards have stddily become far too.nu - merous to men– tion. But the most important fact is that J a– cobs has spent the last two years of college eligibility on the grounds of PSU. Her ac– complishments rival that of any of the oth– er marque ath– letes that have toiled on the Park Blocks. She belo:qg$ on a celebrated list that inclq,q~s such nam~s as Lomax, Sanders, Russell, Williams and Delgardo. Yet she has remained in relative obscurity, a place in .which ~he takes great comfort. You won't hear Jacobs tooting her own hom on the Park Blocks at noon Friday anytime soon. She took the long r9ute to PSU. Jacobs gradu~ ated from Central Catholic and headed south to play two years at Fullerton Junior College. Soft– ball is a big-time sport in the state ofCalifornia. She lovefthe sun and could very well have spent the rest of her life in Southern California. But that would have been the easy way out. She could have played at any major Division I program in the countrY; but fdr a variety ofrea– sons she was drawn north once again. Don't ex– pect a big cheer however from the opposition's batters. Her most important asset is a fastball that has been clocked in the mid-sixties. Her control is rock solid and has earned her 41 career victories against only 12 losses. In 355 career innings pitched she has sent 229 batters back to the pines with heads shaking. She cut her earned average in half over last season coming in at a phenome- nal'0.82. Not: sur– prisingly, this season fli~ honors hive continued to accumulate. She was ''' named to the alkoumamentill! team in all three toumeys that the team has been in– volved in this season, most valuable pitch– er of the Sono– ma State Tournament. Pboto by Dan Manin She was re- cently named to the AU-West Regional all-star team. One canonly imagine what records would have fall~ had Jacobs spent all four years qf her college eligibility at Portland State. • • •Tony Ruzicka SOFTBALL ROSTER Sports/SoftbCIII •
