SOFTBALL TEAM FINISHES SOFTBALL SCOREBOARD THIRD IN COUNTRY T he PSU softball season ended much as it began, on the hopes and dreams of a Kristin Jacobs 65 -mph fastball. After being the No. 1 team in the nation for most of the season, the senior– dominated Vikings failed to capture the na– tional Div ision II softball titl e they had cov– eted. Even so, the team fini shed third in the country with a 43 -9 record , travelling to the nat ional finals in Midland Michigan. The team was lead by Kristin Ja– cobs, a first team All -American, first team All West Region pitcher who compil ed a 24-6 record with a stellar 0.89 ERA. Her performance was not the only memorable one, however. Second T earn All-American, first team All West Region senior center field er Cynthia "Scooter" Macom lead the team with a .386 batting average finishing her four years at PSU at a .361 clip. She also was tabbed to try out for the Pan American team, a lofty honor for a Division II athlete, only the second PSU player ever to be cho- sen. Senior Michele "PeeWee" Hughes also ended her four years of athletic eligibili– ty play ing magnificent defense in the na– tional fin als. The multi-talented athlete ended the season with several school records of her own. She holds the record for most games played with 198, bases on balls with 59 and 47 career sacrifices. Senior Jenn Nichols finished her career with 80 RBI's and 17 triples both also team records. Her leadership and catching ab ilities will be so lely missed. Although seven members of the team have fini shed their eligibility, the fu– ture of the program remains in capable hands. West Region Coach of the Year T eri Mari ani will be back on the wings of her 300th career coaching victory she collected this past season. Second baseman Raquel "Rocky Seward (.358, 17 sacrifi ces ), left fi elder Cathy Eason (.366, 11 triples, and 12 stolen bases ) and Karin Jacobs (.346, 10 doubles and strong defense at third) will all return for another grap at the golden ring. It was a very exciting season for the Vikings which included several victories over Division I ri vals OSU, Stanford and UO. The Vikings beat the very best that the usually dominating California schools threw at them. Humboldt State (7th rated in the country), Chapman (2nd) and Cal Poly SLO (11th) , all travelled to Portland's Erv Lind Stadium for the West regional Semifi– nals and went home losers as did so many others this softball season. • • •Tony Ruzicka DATE 6PP 3/19 3/22 3/22 3/23 3/23 3/23 3/24 i'3/24 3/28 3/28 Hb/29 3/29 3/30 4/6 4/7 12 .3 4/17 4/18 4/19 4/20 Somona Stale Ch(ijlinao UC-Riverside Sotrn!tla State ChicdStale Col State·BakersfieLd Cha .. ;u Cal · 0 Chico tote CS-H d.
