From metalwork Katie goes directly to her drawing class. She sets up her board, grabs her charcoal and " gets to it." " Today I was told to draw a doll 's body. I don 't know why but that's what they told me so I'll do it. I'm having trouble though ' cause it don 't have a head ." And so it goes for Katie as it has for the past nine years, constantly going from one art form to another. " I got so many irons in the fire I never know what I' m doing." Her days off are spent at home working on her art, a large yard, and taking an occasional drive. " I don 't have any livin ' things around me. I have flowers and plants like that but I don't have any birds or dogs or cats because I don't stay at home long enough . I'd have to take care of them." " What I do have is adilly of a Pontiac, 1955 sedan. I got my first car back in 1926, a Pontiac, and I've had four Pontiacs since." " I go out on the weekends drivin '. I' ll go along the river and take some people with me around. Last Sunday I went to Gresham and this Sunday we' re fixin ' to go to Beaverton. Just anyplace . .. just take out." Katie has become a permanent fixture in the art depart– ment at PSU and-by her account-will continue to be . " As far as I know I' m takin ' classes next term . .. unless they run me off." Of all the classes Katie has taken since her retirement, jewelry is her favorite because she "knows more about it." 49
