_\ 20 On the local level Freeman set many team records. He led the team this season in minutes played (996), field goals (410) , attempts (872) , free throws (149) , free throw attempts (191), free throw percentages (.780) , total points (969) , and average (35.9) . He was also second on the team in field goal shooting (.470) and steals (41). He was third on the team in assists (58) and fourth in rebounds (132). Despite these incredible statistics, Freeman found one of his hardest battles was on the home court. Though the teams changed, his opponent remained the same. Jim Payne, Vanguard sports editor, once wrote, " His legend was one that was far from unnoticed in the basketball world but often neglected by his own PSU fans . He played before as few as 1,000 fans while assaulting the recordbooks on the way to two consecutive national scoring titles." When Freeman played all eyes were on him. Although good for the ego it had its drawbacks. Bottom photo: No violation went unnoticed, as demonstrated by this shot of the Idaho coach . He continued to call attentiot:~ to Freeman on all viola– tions, such as this one where the "Free" stepped out of bounds .
