Blank space is the trahstn ission of in fo rma ti on wher by the viewgr has an opportunity to become involved as a par li ci an t. - Abb ·e offman Stgve Pax ton , dance art"st and perhaps cultural revolutionis t. created blank spa ce at PSU. Once in December and again in March , Paxton s taged "dances and lec– tures" on campus . Both performances involved over forty volunteers who walked the length of the gym or stood en masse in the ballroom for six minutes facing their hometowns . Paxton illustrated taped lectures and premiered "Smiling," a ten minute grin . The medium was the message. The performance was blank space. Blank space is incomplete- like the photographs on this page. The photos do not depicit the entire event but they invite some sort of completion by the imagination. And during the performances when the silence or stillness between action was extended long enough to engage the audience 's imagination they participated too . Chanting poetry. Moving. Talking. Blank space is possibility without conclusion.
