With and without McCarthy, Wayne Morse ap– peared at PSU throughout the year. He came cam– paigning in all the fears of fall , and spoke of Vietnam, North Korea and nuclear disarmament. Said McCar– thy, "Wayne Morse doesn 't let the chips fall where they may, he aims them. " The election and the long recount which followed, however, revealed that Morse 's aim had failed slight– ly this time. What McCarthy had suffered from ma– chine politics in Chicago, Wayne Morse received from the voters of Oregon. He returned to Portland State in the spring. And the same tough candid conviction that had cost him votes ignited standing ovations at the university.
