One of the rewards of setting world records is claiming the same for your country. When Americans scaled Mt. Everest, the flag was raised from the earth's highest point. When two men took the Navy bathyscaph Trieste to a depth of over seven miles below Pacific waters in January, 1960, the flag was pinned to the ocean floor at the deep– est point of penetration by man. The two men operating the Trieste on the record dive were Navy Lt. Don Walsh and Jacque Picard, one of the designers of the bathyscaph . In Janu– ary Lt. Walsh visited Portland State . Walsh , illustrating his experiences in deep-sea research and exploration with color slides , referred to the sea as a " vast nutrient soup" that could be tapped to help underfed countries. He stressed that while governments are beginning to realize the oceans are the earth's last frontier, they are slow to establish national oceanography pro– qrams. It is conceivable that in the near future international competition for inner space may develop into a rivalry like the race into outer space . 79
