Uhuru, meaning freedom, was a cry heard throughout Kenya on Dec. 12. Two weeks later Kenyan students from the Portland area and some 300 other persons gathered in College Center to celebrate Kenya's independence. One of the Kenyan speakers said, "It is fit– ting that the birth of Kenya on Dec. 12 should come on the eve of a Holy Week. May it truly signify 'Peace on earth and good will to all men'." Portland State junior Solomon Math– enge gave the introductory remarks followed by guest speakers Mayor Terry D. Schrunk and State Senator Alfred Corbett. Six students then told about their country. Peter Kenyanjui, another PSC junior, told about "The nature of the new government." He said, "not everyone is ready to accept the responsibility under a free constitu– tion." The students agreed that prob– lems faced Kenya, but, as with every new nation, "there must be a period of gaining confidence." Mayor Schrunk emphasized that students training in the United States will one day "go back to help solve Kenya's problems." 49
