Viking_Yearbook_64
Jerry Lyons, youthful, soft-spoken, but hard-driving coach of the 1963 Viking football team , began his college varsity career at PSC with a record-breaking season . Lyons guided the team to three school records : Best season record– six won , two lost ; longest winning streak-five games; first Oregon Col– legiate Conference title in football. How the team felt about its new coach may have been expressed best after the end of the season when a first string tackle commented, "When the team met for the first time in the fall , we thought the guy wearing the baseball cap was one of the players ." That feel– ing didn't last long . At the close of the season, Lyons lay happily at the foot of a cold shower, brought there by a shouting, happy team after the last game. A player remarked, " Hey, coach, next year unbeaten-right?" scores September 21 Portland State 26 Lewis & Clark 37 September 28 Portland State 27 Pacific 7 October 5 Portland State 38 Eastern Oregon 0 October 12 Portland State 26 Oregon Tech 7 October 26 Portland State 19 (Homecoming) Southern Oregon 14 November 2 Portland State 32 Oregon College 13 November 9 Portland State 7 Linfield 14 November 16 Portland State 31 Ramblers 13 28
