carnival It was abominable with snow, man, when 5400 students from 47 col– leges assaulted the slopes of Mt. Bachelor at the PSC-sponsored Winter Carnival in February. Initi– ated at Mt. Hood in 1956, the annual trek to upper-pastures has devel– oped into a big-time production– the largest intercollegiate winter competition in the U. S. Grown too big for Hood , the Carnival moved to Bend in 1962. If this year's explosion-from 2000 last year-is symbolic of future growth, either the programming or the map of Bend will need extensive revamp– ing. A steady stream of collegians flowed into Bend all day Friday. In the stepped up holiday tempo , they reveled continuously, ate when they thought about it, slept hardly at all-literally intoxicated by the prospect of three sun-drenched winter days-in mountain air with the tang of new-brewed ale . Carnival directors Dave Whitehead and Dave Yaden greeted the first– nighters jam-packed in the Bend High auditorium, then promptly yielded the floor to the inter-school talent contest, which was won by the Weekenders , comic folk group from Lewis and Clark . Ending the contest on a regal note, Corky Demler of Willamette University was chosen 1964 Winter Carnival Queen . Still teary-eyed , Queen Corky ruled over the informal warm-up dance when hundreds gy– rated to the rock-and-roll music of Portl and's Coachmen . 101
