EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WILLARD B. SPALDING Chairman, Education Department Portland State awards the bachelor of arts and bachelor bf science degrees in 15 areas of the liberal art'S and sciences; in Gen­ eral Studies, and in fou r professional areas: Teacher Education, Business Administration, Applied Science, and So~ial Work:. The latter is the college's recently authorized and first graduate-level program and is in the organizational sfage now. Teacher Education is the oldest of the professional programs at the college. The Education Division under Dr. Willard B. Spalding, prepares the third largest number of teachers among all Oregon instifutions, public and private. Within the State System of Higher Education, the approximately 250 graduates closely J. V. HOLLAND RAY O. WOLF approaches the numbers receiving education degrees at the two Executive Officer, Director of Student Teaching largest institutions, Universify of Oregon and Oregon State. Health and Physical Education As the oldest of the College's five academic divisions, educa­ tion has the longest list of alumni. Its former students are st'affing elementary and high schools all over the country. The Department of Health and Physical Education is under the Education Division. As in other state colleges, students are required to have six credit hours of health and physical education in order to graduate. 23
