SWARTHOUT Dean of Faculty Physical growth at Portland State-numbers of students and new buildings-is easy to see; not' so evident to the off-campus eye is the expansion of curricula and teaching staff to meet the needs of this diverse urbanstudent body. Responsibility for the development of this academic complex lies wit'h Dr. John Swarthout whose role as dean of faculty is of great­ est influence during these early years as the whole shape of the college is being determined. The inauguration and maintenance of courses, of divisional and departmental structure, planning of the instructional budget' within biennial limitations, expansion and quality of the teaching staff, are some of the responsibilit'ies of this office. A professor of political science, Dean Swarthout also finds time to be a frequent consultant and speaker before civic organiza­ tions, on television and radio discussions of local, state and federal problems. 22
