The Viks halted Oregon College of Education 14-6 before an appreciative Hom e com i n g crowd. Eastern Oregon, although outgunned in every department but the scoreboard, held the Viks to a 6-6 standoff at the home Roosevelt High School field the following week. Then came one of the biggest victories in PSC football history. The Vikings, rated at least a four­ touchdown underdog by most ex­ perts, stunned the University of Nevada, which is aspiring to big­ time athletic status, 14-7. It was no fluke victory. Smithwick's grid­ ders controlled every phase of the game posting the triumph. The local team closed out the season the following week by drop­ ping a 40-14 decision to Lin field at McMinnville. 179
