148 1961 In its sponsorship of the Mt. Hood Win ter Carnival with indoor and outdoor snow sports, Portland State College has become a catalytic agency bringing together col leges and universities from all over the Northwest. The 1961 Carnival added four to make a total of 20 participating colleges. An estimated 5000 students crowded the ski and toboggan slopes, the public and pri vate lodges, of Oregon's famed winter sportsland for the February 24-26 weekend. The Carnival also added a day and a dimension to the fun - a pre-'weekend Thursday and Friday of ice skating, snow "sculping", and a fashion show at the new Lloyd Center in Portland. And a mischievous mascot, a mythical Mr. Hoodwinks, cartoon creation of Bob Brunjes. M r. Hoodwinks, a conniving linle mountain demon who works to loosen ski bindings, hide slalom markers, and general ly confuse the unwary, became the symbol of good sportsmanship, fun, and mischief at this year's Carnival.
