Appraising masculine beauty at Portland State was strictly inci dental to the real purpose of the Ugly Man Contest - selling the 1961 yea rbook. The contest was held at the end of fall term. I t enlisted student organizations to back personal candidates. Everyone who bought a Viking was eligible to vote. Roy Sampsel, nominated by Alpha Phi, carried off the dubiou-s Ugly Man honors and engraved lighter for himself, and a perpetual trophy for this sorority. Jane McNeff, president of Alpha Phi, accepted the trophy from Viking Business Manager Carl Lizberg, while "Ugly Man" Samp",,1 looks on. Roy Sampsel couldn't appear more proud if the trophy in his hand stood for a Mr. America title, instead of Ugliest Man on Campus. Ugly Man Contest 147
