To the college student, the printed word is of grea t va lue, for it is from thi s source that we gain knowledge. If we are to attain our goals we must read volume after volume of material; often there is little enjoyment in such undertak ing. In many instances college students think they detest the word "book." But as we well know, not all volumes were published merely as texts for students. Many publications are used to preserve our history, and many are produced merely for reader enjoyment. It is the sincere hope of the 1958 Viking Staff that the volume we have produced will fulfill all the qualities previously mentioned. We dedicate this book to all who will open its cover in hopes that they will find much enjoyment in the follow mg pages. Editor After three years of devoted service to Port land State College, a man of major importance to our school's history has resigned. Dr. John Cramer is leaving PSC as its first President, but he is leaving behind the results of his diligent service, a growing and expanding Portland State College. 13
