SPEECH JOURNALISM ART The purpose of the Speech department is to help students to speak more effectively and to broaden them emotionally and intellectually. To accomplish this a wide variety of courses is of­ fered in speech and discussion, drama and stage­ craft. The department also sponsors dramatic productions and intercollegiate competition in discussion and debate. The aim of the Art and Journalism depart­ ments is to give the student a background in these fields. This may lead to further professional training or may be used in other fields. ROBERTS Speech, department head MUSIC The Music department, head­ ed by John Stehn, offers the com­ plete University of Oregon lower division music curriculum. Be­ sides courses in Theory, Music Literature, Applied Music, and Music Education, the depart­ ment offers the students oppor­ tunity to participate in the band, the choir and several ensemble groups.
