Looking back over a period of three years the music department has increased in mem bership and in activity . In 1946, music was not offered at Vanport but b~cause of the in creasing interest in music and choral groups a course in Music Appreciation .was offered . The chorus was entirely voluntary and met when convenient. During the winter term of 1948 the group moved into its new quarters in the Personnel Building. Two pianos and a very fine record player were added to the de partment. A new course, Music 281, was introduced into the curriculum during the spring of 1949. This course is designed (or education majors and elementary music teachers and offers the student a knowledge o( the fundamentals of music. A sixty voice Acappe\la Choir meets , under the direction of Howard Backlund, three times a week . A student director and choir officers help in organizing the activities of the group. A great deal of talent is evident in the music department and plans are being set to add other music courses to the curriculum.
