From: Dr. Epler To: "Viking" Nearly two thousand students have enrolled at Vanport College during this first year. The students and facuIty, with the spirit of the "Vikings," have developed a worthwhile college program in spite of a shortage of classrooms and other handicaps, and have demonstrated that a coUege is what students and teachers make it. Your pioneering this year at Vanport in establishing clubs, student organizations, and patterns of conduct will influence next year's class and the classes that fol­ low. Education is a form of wealth that bankruptcy or depression cannot destroy. If you are more useful to the community and a better citizen after your sojourn here, then Vanport College has succeeded! An educated citizenry is the foundation of a democracy. The G. I. Bill of Rights is perhaps the greatest advancement American democracy and education have made in this century. Vanport College, with its ninety per cent vet­ eran enrollment, is a direct result of this forward step.
