DON CARLO TOM HECKARD JOHN SANDVIG VANGUARD HISTORY Don Carlo, blind veteran, was the first editor of the college newspaper. His associate was Juhn Sandvig, and frank Robens, head of the English department, was faculty adviser. On Nuv<:mber 15, 1946 the first issue of the weekly paper was printed under the temporary title, "Vet's Extended." With the beginning of the winter term the name was changed to "Vanguard"-,\ suggestiun from Vaughn Albertson of the English department. John Sandvig edited four issues during the winter term. He waS succeeded by Bill Van Troyer who, with Tom Heckard as news editor, turned out the next five editions. On April 1, 1947, Tom Heckard, the only remaining member of the original scaff, beeline ditor . Under Heckard's guidance the last nine editions of the Vanguard were printed. 13ill Hawes held the position of advertising and business manager until February, 191J7. He was succeedeJ by Ken Eunsworth and James Pratt who filled the positions of advertising manager and business manager, respectively. Due to the heavy class schedules on the part of most Vanport stud<:nts the newspaper was con· rinually facing the prublem of maintaining a complete scaff. In spite of such handicaps however, the Vanguard continued to make its appearance every week. Sitting, Left 10 Right-Daniel, Heckard , Cvitanovich .
