5 The RAPS Sheet March 2020 PSU Archives Digital Gallery In memoriam: Roger Lee Moseley, 1928-2020 ROGER L. MOSELEY, who served Portland State for more than 20 years as a professor of business administration, died January 14 in Beaverton at age 91. Professor Moseley was born June 5, 1928, in Bellingham, Washington, and grew up in Olympia. After serving in the Marine Corps, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in 1951 and an M.B.A. from Harvard in 1953. He then moved to Hawaii, where he helped establish the University of Hawaii’s Hilo campus. Professor Moseley served as director at the Hilo campus for six years, then moved to the Honolulu campus, where he was acting dean of the college of general studies. He returned to the University of Washington and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1966. The following year Professor Moseley joined the Portland State business faculty. During his PSU career he served as chair of the Department of Management, as the interim dean of the School of Business Administration, and on an advisory committee for the School’s Advisory Board. Professor Moseley published numerous professional papers and served on many school and University committees as well as community, professional, and honorary boards. In the 1970s and 1980s he helped US Bancorp’s program to train and develop women employees for management positions. It was at the School of Business Administration in 1967 that Professor Moseley met his future wife, Sylvia. They married on April 21, 1982, on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. He continued his interest in boating with Sylvia; the couple owned two powerboats and a trimaran during their marriage. Professor Moseley was an amateur magician, entertaining children in hospitals, schools, and birthday parties, as well as adults at parties and celebrations. Dr. M performed magic tricks while his sidekick, Tomato the Clown, made balloon animals. He was a competitive player of chess and table tennis who wouldn’t hesitate to trounce his opponent just because they were his sons. He encouraged Roger and Randy to persevere until they could beat him fair and square. He was also a car enthusiast, but with a touch of whimsy—he once added a performance exhaust system to the family’s station wagon, making it sound like a hot rod. And it wasn’t until he was 86 that he sold his sports car. Professor Moseley is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his sons, Roger and Randy; his stepdaughter, Kim; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His brother, Spencer, and two half-sisters, Marguerite Clark and Doras McBride, predeceased him. After retirement, Professor Moseley remained involved with the University and PSU athletics. At 1 p.m. we will move to 225 Lincoln Hall, where Christine will present members of the Portland State Opera Program performing excerpts from Merry Wives of Windsor.
