The program’s mission includes making sure that each student’s experience is individually designed to support inclusive academic and career experiences leading to meaningful, integrated employment and self-determination. The two are co-directors of the Think College Inclusion Oregon-PSU (TCIO-PSU), a project funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant. Think College is a national organization dedicated to developing, expanding, and improving inclusive higher education options for people with intellectual disabilities. Ann Fullerton is professor emeritus of education at Portland State. She joined the special education faculty in 1990, teaching across several areas in special education including literacy, assessment, and collaboration. Her focus was on helping adolescents gain the self-knowledge, life skills, and selfdetermination needed for the transition to adulthood. She holds a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Mary Morningstar came to PSU from the University of Kansas, where she earned a Ph.D. in special education. Her research encompasses college and career readiness for youth with disabilities, teacher education and development, and secondary inclusive educational reform. She is the author of The Educator’s Guide to Implementing Transition Planning and Services, published in 2017. The RAPS meeting begins at noon Thursday, February 20, in 333 Smith Memorial Student Union, 1825 SW Broadway, with a light deli lunch. 2 The RAPS Sheet February 2020 IT IS NOT TOO EARLY to mark your calendar for Wednesday, April 15—tax day. That’s the date for this year’s President’s Luncheon for retired faculty and staff. The luncheon is typically held in May, but because of various conflicts, this year the luncheon is being held a month early. Stephen Percy, Portland State’s interim president, will discuss the state of the University and future aspirations and new developments for PSU. Before serving as interim president, Dr. Percy served as dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs since 2014. Before coming to PSU he was dean of the College of Public Affairs at the University of Baltimore. Dr. Percy is co-author of six books and one textbook. At Portland State, Dr. Percy headed the campus-wide effort to expand centers and institutes that promote civic engagement, community problem solving, and community and regional planning. The President’s Luncheon will be a fun and informative event, so sign up early! Additional information regarding time, parking, and other details will be in upcoming issues of the RAPS Sheet. We hope to see you there! —Dave Krug CO-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Interim president to headline April 15 annual luncheon Move it or lose it SUSAN POULSEN (top left), professor emeritus of speech communication and a licensed nurse, speaks at “Surviving and Thriving as We Age,” the RAPS general meeting on January 16. 3 The RAPS Sheet February 2020 RAPS Group Reports Book Group IN JANUARY WE MET at Leif and Marge Terdal’s home and discussed Lynne Olson’s Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with England in its Darkest, Finest Hour. A detailed history, the book introduces many individuals that we did not know much about. It explores the origins of an Anglo-American alliance and the tensions that it endured. With its focus on London, it presents material new to many of us. In February we have decided to discuss The Overstory by Richard Powers. A Pulitzer Prize winner, it has won wide acclaim, and we are eager to read and talk about it. We will meet at the home of Felicia Wirtz, 16433 Avamere Court, Portland. Contact Felicia at 503-645 0947 or feliciawritz@gmail.com to let her know whether you will be able to be there. The book group meets at 1:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. New members are always welcome. —Joan Shireman Bridge Group THE RAPS BRIDGE GROUP meets in the afternoon on the first Tuesday of each month. We begin play at 12:15 p.m. and try to finish up by 4 p.m. We meet in Smith Center. We have had some new and returning members join us for our last few meetings. Please feel free to be another one of our new members for bridge (we really would welcome more new members). Our next meeting will be on the afternoon of Tuesday, February 4, in 329 Smith Center. Please mark your calendars for our Tuesday, March 3, meeting. I will send out the reminder email notice about one week prior to each date we play. If you wish to join us, please contact Steve Brennan, 503-646-6297. My email address is: the.steve.brennan@gmail.com. —Steve Brennan Hiking Group OUR TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, hike will go from Kenton to the bluffs over Swan Island, across Swan Island, then back to the MAX Yellow Line. Total distance is 6.1 miles. Almost the entire hike will be on city streets, including a stretch along busy North Basin Avenue on Swan Island. The best way to get there is on the MAX Yellow Line. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the northbound platform of the North Lombard Transit Center, which is at the intersection of North Interstate Avenue and Lombard Street. The hike will end at the Prescott and Interstate MAX station. We will eat at one of the many cafes in the area; one possibility is a cafe on Swan Island before the end of the hike. The exact lunch location will be decided by the hikers. This hike can be found on page 14 of the 2008 edition of Portland City Walks by Laura Foster.
