The RAPS Book Group met on March 15 at the home of Felicia Wirtz and discussed The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. A story of two sisters in occupied France during World War II, the trauma and decisions of the sisters provoked a lively discussion. One of the members, Leif Terdal, enriched the discussion with his recounting of his own experiences, and added little-known information to explain Germany’s ability to advance so rapidly into France. On April 19, we will be discussing The President’s Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity by Nancy Gibbs and Michael Duffy. From the back cover: “Michael Duffy and Nancy Gibbs have taken us inside one of the most powerful and unusual families in American life – the brotherhood of former presidents of the United States.” We will meet at the home of Nancy Chapman, 4214 NE Hazelfern Place, Portland at our usual 1:30 pm time. Call Nancy at 503-234-0162 or e-mail her at chapmannj@comcast.net to RSVP and get directions. The group has selected Timothy Egan’s Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis as the book to discuss in May. This is a biography of Edward Curtis, whose photographs are on display at the Portland Art Museum through early May. We will meet at the home of Joan Shireman. The Book Group meets at 1:30 pm on the third Tuesday of every month. New members are always welcome. --Joan Shireman The RAPS Bridge Group meets on Tuesday afternoon once a month. We are changing our meeting time to 12:15 pm from May onward. In April, we will meet at the “regular time” of 1 pm. The time change is to give us better parking options. We usually play on the first Tuesday but for April we need to move to the second Tuesday because of room scheduling problems. Please mark your calendars for the next three months’ bridge dates and times: Tuesday, April 12 at 1:00 pm in Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU) 236 Tuesday May 3 at 12:15 pm in SMSU 238 Tuesday June 7 at 12:15 pm in SMSU 236 I will send out a reminder email notice closer to each date we play. The RAPS bridge group is very friendly, and we are always looking for new players. If you wish to join us, please contact Steve Brennan, 503-646-6297. My email address is the.steve.brennan@gmail.com. --Steve Brennan The RAPS Hiking Group on March 8 hiked out to the lighthouse near Warrior Point on Sauvie Island. Due to high water on the beach and the fact that the interior trail was not very inviting we did not make it to the point where the Willamette and Columbia meet. We estimate we walked about 6 miles. The Tuesday, April 12 hike will be at Lacamas Lake Park in Camas, WA. We will actually be hiking around Round Lake, and we hope to see camas in bloom. Meet at 9:30am at the Lacamas Lake Park parking lot. More information on this and future hikes can be found on the quick links on the RAPS web page. (http://www.pdx.edu/raps). This will be the last local hike until the November Oaks Bottom hike. We start our longer carpool hikes in May with a walk through the Mosier Tunnels. --Larry Sawyer 3
