28 PORTLAND STATE MAGAZINE SPRING 2017 VALERIE CLEARY has returned to Portland State as director of Athletics after spending the past two years as athletics director at Willamette University in Salem. The former PSU associate athletics director says, “I feel fortunate to return to a campus and department where I learned so much and developed lifelong friendships.” Cleary takes over leadership of a program that has won 28 conference team championships and made 18 NCAA post-season appearances since 2003. She replaces Mark Rountree, who is now deputy athletics director of Georgia Tech. Cleary returns to top spot WOMEN’S BASKETBALL posted their biggest turnaround in program history, finishing the season 12 games better than last season with a 16-17 overall record. The Vikings knocked off the first-place team in the Big Sky Conference twice during the regular season before defeating second-seeded North Dakota to advance to the Big Sky Tournament semifinals. Portland State has much to look forward to for next season. The Vikings return with nearly their entire roster, including Ashely Bolston pictured here, who finished the season with 521 points.
