ALUMNI NOTES COMPILED BY DONNA HARRIS ' 07 1956-1959 Betty Roberts '58 has written an autobiography tided With Grit and by Crace: Break- ing Trails in Law and Politics. Roberts was the first woman appointed to rhe Oregon Court ofAppeals in 1977 and rhe first woman appointed to the Oregon Supreme Court in 1982. he lives in Porrland. 1960-1979 Alumni who competed in varsity track from 1960 through 1971 honored coach Ra lph Davis in Ju ly. Bryce Noel '63 is founder and principa l at Black Diamond Strategies, a financial planning company in Los Angeles. Robert "Bob" Francis '64 received his high school diploma in spring 2008 from Beaver- ton High School through rhe "Operation Recognition" program char honors World War II veterans who did not earn their diplomas due to military service. He lives in Beaverton with his wife, Sally. Larry Large '64 retired in July from Sierra evada College in Lake Tahoe, evada, where he served as interim president for two years. Large has held many top education poses around the country, includ- ing executive vice president of Reed College in Porrland and vice cha ncellor of the Oregon University System. He recen rly returned to Lake Oswego with his wife, Marsha. Judy Hoiness '65 has retired from reaching art at Central Oregon Community College. Hoiness recenrly attended a PSU alumni reception in Bend with her husband, Donald. Charles Bolton '66, MST '70 received the 2008 John C. Mc– Manus Distinguished Teacher Award from the Oregon Music Educators Association. Bolton was honored for his lifelong service to music education. He caught at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham and Warner Pacific College in Porrland. David R. Lievsay '69 has earned certification as a registered communications d istribution designer by Build– ing Industry Consu lting Service International. Lievsay joined Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mat– tern, an architectural and engi– neering firm in Virginia Beach, Virginia, nearly a decade ago. Bill Plympton '69 has released his latest feature film, Idiots and Angels, a dark comedy about a man's batrle for his soul. Plymp– ton owns Bill Plympton Studios and lives in New York City. Lorraine Drougas Meadows MS '70 has retired as an el– ementary school reacher in Port– land Public Schools, where her daughter, Sonja Meadows '85 now reaches. Another daughter, Christine Meadows, is artistic director for opera ar Porrland State, and daughter Linda Meadows '82, MSW '85 , is a 22 PORTLAND STATE MAGAZINE FALL 2008 social worker with rhe state of Washington in Vancouver. Gary Smith '70, MSW '74 is now retired. Smith was the community mental health program director for Multno– mah, Tillamook, and Deschutes counties. He lives pare rime in Redmond and Hillsboro, and says he is looking forward to being a field instructor again for rhe PSU School of Social Work. ErikWiegardt '70 is cel– ebrari ng 12 years as founding director of rhe Stoic Registry, an international commu- nity dedicated to the study and practice of Stoic phi losophy located at www.newstoicregistry. org. He lives in San D iego. Michael McKeel '70 has a dental practice in Gresham. Thomas P. Geil '71 is special events coord inator for rhe city of West Linn and is manag– ing editor of the Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation month ly, statewide newspaper. Tim Juett '71 recenrly received a physical therapy doctoral degree from Rocky Moun- tain University of Health Professions, Provo, Utah. Juett is working ar the Vet– erans Administration Medi- cal Center in Roseburg. George Blackman '72 was an aerospace welder for 30 years at Precision Castparts. Blackman recenrly retired and is now sculpting metal, riranium, and wood. He lives in Redmond, Washington. Wayne Chapman '72 , MA '77 is a professor of English at C lemson University in Clem– son, ouch Carolina. He is also di rector of the university's center for elec– tronic and digital publishing. Steven Tubbs '73 is presi- dent of Turf Merchants, Inc., which develops turf grasses in Tangent, Oregon. 1he com– pany was recognized by Oregon Business Magazine as one of the top 150 private compa- nie in Oregon for 2008. Shirley Shupe Martin MA '74 and her husband, John , recenrly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Marcin taught high school English for more than 25 year in Oregon and Washington. She lives in orch Plains with her husband, John Hinds '75, MST '79, a reacher for Porrland Public chools. Jerry Griffin '76 is an assis– tant professor of human ser– vices at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusem.
