It was an honor for me to be on campus as Portland State celebrated the life and accomplishments of the late Joseph C. Blume!, a man I knew as professor, president, and friend. The hard work and dedicacion given to us by Joe in the rnrbulent '70s and money– scarved '80s laid che foundation for whac the University is today. President Blume! enriched many of our lives because of his caring attitudes. Ir did nor macrer to him whether we were administrators, faculty, scaff, or students; he appreciated our con– tributions. We will miss his presence. Lyn Stone, retired PSUstaff Erievilfe, New York Editor's note: An event is planned in October to redesignate West Hall as Joseph Blume! Hall. The student housing building is located on Southwest 1 zh and Mill. Volunteering in New Orleans More than a year after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, I read an anicle describing the continuing needs of its residents. I decided to add my semi-skilled efforts. I made my first trip in December 2006 to help rebuild a friend's father's home in the Seventh Ward. Since then, I have been back five more rimes to work on char house, an adjacent home, and another across the street that was occupied by a 10 I-year-old widow. This volunteer work has been one of rhe most satisfying experiences char I have had in my 63 years of being on this planer. I am convinced that with retired skilled workers from across the nation, we have the ability ro bring New Orleans and rhe Gulf Cost back bigger, better, and stronger chan ever. Architecture students (top left to right) Justin Guadagni, Maggie Combs, Dan Wood, and Brandi Phillips worked with the New Orleans Alliance for Affordable Energy for one week this spring. They spent a second week exploring mixed-use housing for the city, resulting in concepts such as Curtis Roth's, pictured here. ►
