2023 PORTLAND STATE FOOTBALL 4 | 2023 Vikings Football VIKINGS GAME DAY Christian Grubb (23, center) broke through this melee of defenders for a 60-yard punt return for touchdown. Mark Boling Three weeks of football have passed and the Portland State Vikings have a 1-2 record. But there is still much to be learned about PSU as the Vikings step into Big Sky Conference play today against Cal Poly. Portland State left no doubt about who the better team was at Hillsboro Stadium last Saturday afternoon in a 91-0 win over NAIA North American. However, after three weeks of non-conference football it is still difficult to know exactly who the Vikings are. They have played a pair of FBS teams (both losses) and a lower division team (a big win). Still, PSU will not be measured by any of those results. The real test – and analysis – can begin today against Cal Poly. PSU’s FCS games will determine where they belong in the Big Sky Conference, arguably the strongest FCS league in the nation, and perhaps on a national level. Today’s game provides an opportunity to start league play at the top of the Big Sky. The Vikings will also attempt to avenge a loss to Cal Poly (49-42) in last season’s finale. In that game, JR QB Dante Chachere went down with an injury in the first half and the Vikings soon found themselves playing catch up. PSU is relatively healthy behind Chachere this season. With a deep group of running backs and a deep group of wide receivers, Coach Bruce Barnum expects has the potential to be explosive offensively. The defense, a youthful group up front, has shown great potential. They shut out lower division North American and held them to -23 yards total offense. However, the area the Vikings hope to improve in Big Sky play is getting pressure to opposing quarterbacks. If they can do that, a veteran group of LBs and DBs should benefit and have the opportunity to create turnovers. Cal Poly comes into today’s game with a 2-1 record under first-year Head Coach Paul Wulff. The Mustangs have wins over San Diego of the Pioneer league and Division II Lincoln University. The loss came at San Jose State. Success in Big Sky game one at home appears vital as Portland State goes on the road next week to face third-ranked Montana State, possibly the Vikings’ most challenging conference game of the season. STORYLINES • Portland State is 14-12 in Big Sky Conference home openers. • Both schools were members of the Division II Western Football Conference from 1982-1992. 2023 PORTLAND STATE FOOTBALL 6 | 2023 Vikings Football during those Division II days... at the Division I level, Cal Poly holds a 10-5 advantage in the series. • Cal Poly Head Coach Paul Wulff was previously a head coach at Eastern Washington (200007) and Washington State. He was 5-4 against the Vikings at his earlier stops. • Former Portland State tight end Mike Palomino holds the Viking record for touchdown receptions in a game with five set against Cal Poly in 1991 (a 55-35 PSU win)... former Viking defensive back Vince Barrett holds the PSU record for longest interception return for touchdown in a game set against Cal Poly in 1989 (85 yards in a 55-26 Viking win). TEAM LEADERS • PORTLAND STATE: JR QB Dante Chachere has completed 33 of 61 passes for 323 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He has also run for 107 yards on 25 carries, scoring one TD... FR RB Quincy Craig leads the team in rushing with 27 carries for 165 yards and two scores. Craig also has eight receptions for 82 yards. His 363 all-purpose yards rank second in the Big Sky Conference... SR WR Jermaine Braddock leads the team with 11 receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns. JR WR Nate Bennett has six catches for 54 yards... FR LB Michael Montgomery leads the team with 18 tackles. SO LB Parker McKenna has 17 tackles, two tackles for loss and an interception... SR CB Isaiah Avery has an interception and a fumble recovery, both coming against Wyoming... PSU is averaging 321.0 yards and 38.3 points per game... the Vikings have given up 351.0 yards and 37.3 points per game... SR P George Triplett has had a solid start to the season with a 43.8 yard punting average... JR K Gianni Smith has been strong on kickoffs with a 64.9 yard average and 13 touchbacks on 14 kicks. • CAL POLY: Quarterback Sam Huard, a Washington transfer, has completed 62 of 97 passes for 759 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions... receivers Logan Booher (12-151-1) and Tyrece Fairly-Diyem (12-175-2) have been his main targets... Mark Biggins is the team rushing leader with 23 carries for 105 yards and a touchdown... the Mustangs average 77.3 yards rushing and 278.0 yards passing per game... on defense, Utah transfer linebacker Ethan Calvert has 26 tackles and a sack to lead the Mustangs. Elijah Ponder has made 15 tackles and three sacks to lead the team... Cal Poly has 10 sacks in three games... the Mustangs allow 315.7 yards and 29.7 points on defense. OFFENSIVE NOTES • Portland State is averaging 321.0 yards and 38.3 points per game... the Vikings have committed three turnovers... the Vikings’ 91-0 score ranks as the third-highest scoring game in PSU history. PSU had a 105-0 win over Delaware State and 93-7 win over Cal Poly Pomona in 1980 during the Mouse Davis Run-and-Shoot era. The game goes down has the highest-scoring output ever by a Big Sky Conference team... PSU had 91 points with two minutes remaining in the third quarter and did not score after that… the Vikings had touchdowns on their first 11 drives and added an interception return for touchdown and punt return for touchdown. • NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: JR OL Billy Lutui started at right guard for the Vikings last Saturday against North American. That came after starting the first two games at defensive tackle. Lutui, a transfer from Sacramento State, was deemed more valuable on the offensive side of the ball, and it took only three practices. DEFENSIVE NOTES • The Viking defense has allowed 351.7 yards and 37.3 points per game... PSU has forced four turnovers and has a +1 turnover margin. • NOTES FROM NORTH AMERICAN: In the 91-0 win over North American, the Vikings pitched their first shutout since a 24-0 win over Idaho on Oct. 12, 2019. PSU had 15 tackles for loss and two interceptions. The Viking D held North American had -23 yards of total offense. That is a new PSU record. The previous mark was 24 total yards by Western Washington in 1981… NAU had -49 yards rushing (Simon Fraser had -65 yards rushing in 2019)… NAU was 1-15 on third downs and converted only one first down on offense... 34 different Vikings made tackles in the game. • PICK SIX: The Vikings also had their first interception for a touchdown since Patrick Onwuasor’s 42-yarder on September 13, 2014
