ALUM NOTES '80 Teresa "Tess" O'Hearn 1s the employee benefits coordinator with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue in Aloha. O'Hearn previ– ously was the benefits manager at PSU. She and her husband, James Roberts '00, live in Portland. '8) Co l. Lori Heim was recently elected to a three-year term on the American Academy of Fam– ily Physicians board of directors. The academy represents more than 94,000 physicians and medical students nationwide. Ileim is stationed at McChord Air Force Base in Washington, where she is chief of medical staff and an instructor in advanced cardiac life support. Eric Chalamet MAT is a teacher of dressage, which is the train– ing of horses using subtle con– trols. Chalamct is also a horseman (a civilian post) for the French Annys cavalry. He lives in Milly, France. Jeanette Grant, a child welfare caseworker with the Oregon Department of ILuman Services in Lakeview, was recently selected to receive the annual Tom Moan Award, which recog– nizes exemplary casework prac– tice by the department. Eva Kripalani is senior vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary at Knowl– edge Learning Corporation (for– merly known as KinderCare Learning Centers). Kripalani has been with the company since 1997. She also serves on the board of PERS (Oregon's public retirement system) and the P U Foundation board. 'Ll. Steven Nelson was appoi nted to the Connecticut Business and Industry Associations board of directors in October. Nelson is president at Health Net of the Northeast, Inc., in Shelton, Connecticut. The company is Connecticut's second largest health insurer. '85 David Lezak PhD is president and founder of Wygant Scien– tific, Inc., an automated call answering technology company. Lezak started the company in 1983 while working on his the– sis at PSU. Matthew Mattila MSW is a chi ld welfare coordinator with the social work professional program at University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. '87 James Koenig is a senior spe– cialist engineer with The Boeing Company in Gresham. 88 Sale h AI-Busaley is a senior engineer with STC, a telecom– munications business in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Patrice (Morris) Hudson is program administrator and adviser for the P U Interna– tional Studies Program. Jo Ann Workman MS is an English as a second language instructor at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington. '89 Stephani e Rickert is executive director of Old McDonalds Farm in Corbett. The nonprofit Keeping the coffee and tea world abuzz W riting and editing is Julie Beals' cup of tea . lts her cup of coffee, too . Named editor of Fresh Cup mag– azine in March 2005, Beals '96, MS '99 guides the 14-year-old Portland-based trade publication to offer readers the latest in everything about coffee and tea , from farm trends to cash-flow management, third-world markets to cutting– edge espresso equipment, "everything from the chemistry of coffee to its history," says Beals . "Its devoted to making coffee and tea retailers successfu l," she explains, adding that coffee and tea afficionados also enjoy the monthly magazine. Current trends7 "There's a big upsurge in the Carolinas right now: It's the new hot-spot for specialty coffee . But the Northwest is by no means saturated." Thoughts on Starbucks7 "They have edu– cated the market. People know what a latte and a cappuccino are." Beals, 33, was born in Omaha, Nebraska, spent pan of her childhood in a small Colorado town "twice the elevation of Denver," then moved back to Nebraska for high school where she was editor of her school paper. At 18, she felt a strong 30 PSU MAGAZI E WINTER 2006 pull westward, and moved to Portland, where she had pre– viously visited a friend. "lt seems strange, but ever since the third grade, when Mount St. Helens erupted, l thought, 'Wow, l really need to go check that out.' So l got on the train. " Enrolled at PSU whi le working for in– flight magazine publisher Skies America, Beals fell in love with political science, "a very va luable degree for critical thinking and writing. l loved the department. The professors were incredibly accessible ... people with doctorates from Columbia University, Brown . .. people who had been advise rs to the White House. lt was wonderfu l to hear their firsthand experi– ences," Beals recalls. "Julies a fireball, " says friend and co-worker David Drouin, art director at Fresh Cup . "She doesn't do things half– way, and when she finally makes a decision she goes for it with everything she has , and with grace.
