HALL OF FAME ADD 10: The second P U Athletic Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Feb. 20 at the Lloyd Center DoubleTree. The 10 inductees will also be honored during half-time of the men's ba ketball game against Montana State the following evening at the Rose Garden. Reservations for the Hall of Fame banquet should be made by calling Dodie Warner at the Viking Club, 725-5639. Entering the PSU Hall of Fame this year are former athletes Chri Crawford and June Jones (football), Karen Haberlach (volleyball), athy Kuntz (volleyball and basket– ball), Dan Russell (wrestling), and Tom Trebelhom (ba e– ball). Coaches and administra– tors elected for the Hall of Fame are Ralph Davis (track and field, football), Jack Dunn (baseball), Roy Love (baseball and athletic director), and Marion Pericin (basketball). Sophomore guard Karrin Wilson scored in double BASKETBALL: In only its second sea on, Coach Ritchie McKay has already led the men's basketball program to new heights. In December, the Vikings scored PSU's first win ever over a PAC-10 school, beating Oregon in Eugene. And, in early-season play, Jenny Yopp's PSU women's team defeated defending WAC Pacific Division cham– pion an Diego State and scared both Oregon and Portland, losing by four and figures three times last season. FOOTBALL: Portland State finished 4-7 in the final season of the two-year comp liance period required by the NCAA to move from Division 11 to Divi ion 1. PSU wa 3-5 in the Big Sky Conference. With only five senior starting and many of the offen ive stars just freshmen, the Viking are poi ed to compete for the league ti tie in 1998, when they will be eligible for po t-season play once again. Running back Charle Dunn wa the first fre hman in PSU history to rush for over 1,000 yard and was named Big Sky Newcomer of the Year. The 6-foot-3, 310-pound offensive guard Bobby Singh was selected first team all– league, and Dunn and five defensive teammates were placed on the second team. VOLLEYBALL: The Vikings volleyball team completed its second eason at the Division I leve l with a 13-17 record and placed fifth in the Big Sky at 7-9. eni or Eav i Shovlin had a banner year, leading the team in kill and setting a new Portland State record for career digs (1 ,742). She became the first volleyball player to win Big Sky player of the week and was named second team All-Conference. CROSS COUNTRY: Both men and women's teams placed ninth in the season– ending Big Sky Conference championship in November. The top runner was freshman Merri Jolma who placed 45th with a time of 20:29 over the Sk cour e. Terry Hobson led the men's team with a 49th place finish and a time of 28: 48 over 8 kilom ters. WOMEN'S SOCCER: Portland tate reached the first Big ky Conference post– season tournament played in this sport in fall 1997. The Vikings lost to eventual cham– pion Montana in the semifi– nals. For the year, PSU wa 4-14-2 and 2-3 in conference matches. Jennifer Bruno wa named first team All– Conference and junior Amica Smith earned A ll-Tournament at the Big Sky playoffs. Junior Brian Towne, a shooting guard, was the surprise player during conference last year.
