Keith McCallum is a commod– ity broker with Pacific Rim Futures in Portland. Following grad uation from PSU, McCallum worked three years at the Chicago Board of Trade. He and his wife, Michele, live in Mt. Tabor and have a two– year-old daughter. Michael Oswald earned a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico in December 1995. Oswald is a legal assistant for the business and corporate area of law at the Portland law firm of Miller, Nash, Wiener, Hager & Carlsen. '91 Patricia "Patty" Ayala MA '95 is the library director for the city of Castle Rock, Wash. Jqhn Girsch is a network administrator with Metro One Telecommunications, a Beaverton company providing enhanced directory a istance. Richard Ladd MBA is an accoun t executive wi th Dean Witter Reynolds Inc. , in Napa, alif. Ladd was among the first graduating class of P U's state– wide MBA program, which enabled him ro continue work– ing on the family farm in eastern Oregon while getting his degree. '92 Pamela Brown is an interior de igner with Bainbridge Design in Portland . Stacy M. Clement (formerly Ted Clement) MA conducted a lecture circuit on the topic "Tran genderism and Society" in October and is arranging a sim ilar circuit for spring 1998, which will include a stop on the PSU campus. lement is preparing for admi ion tests to the doctoral program at the Saybrook Graduate School and Re earch Center in San Franci co. Lauren Dye is a graphic artist and ale representati ve at u Aeon Gallery of Mystical and ontemporary Art and Witch Shoppe in Watertown, Mass. Joann Steward is a commercial loan offi cer in the business banking group at Wells Fargo, erving small businesses in Vancouver, Portland , Salem, Tigard, and Eugene. Steward formerly was a commercial loan officer with First Interstate Bank in Arizona. J ames Lealand Smith '97 h as fo ught cance r since February 1997, and it h as won-but it didn't stop him from rece iving his bach elo r's degree and treasured diploma from Po rtland State during a small, per a nal graduation ceremon y at hi Beaverton h ome Dec. 3. "Getting thi diploma is impo rtant to me," ays Smith. "Be ides the per a nal a ti fac– tion of it, I want to set an example for my children and leave a legacy of high er education to my grandchildren . I n ever h ad thi kind of an example. Getting an education is something to work for." And Smith h a wo rked for it. The last term, especially, was difficult for him, but h e never let his illness top him. 26 PSU MAGAZI EWINTER 199 '93 Tamie Celorie MBA is a senior cost analyst for Freightliner Corporation, a manufacturing company in Portland. Melvin Fuentes is a senior consultant for employee benefit ervices at Deloitte & Touche, L.L.P., an accounting firm in Portland. Barbara Jordan is a busine s analyst manager with Intel Corporation, a semiconductor manufacturer. Jordan lives in San Francisco. Paul Kucera received a ma ter's degree in English from the Uni versity of Connecticut in 1996. He has completed his first year a a teaching assistant whi le pursuing his doctorate in English from Michigan State Univer ity in Ea t Lansing. Gloria Phillips is a fourth-grade teacher at King Elementary chool in Portland . Sally Ann Wells is the owner of Cascadia Exchange, a fund – ing consultation firm in Portland . "Quitting simply isn 't in his vocabula ry," says his wife Yvonne, director of nursing serv ices at the Masonic and Eastern Star [Retirement/Nursing] H ome. Smith h as been a fighter all his life . He began work a t a mac hine sh op at age 13 and own ed it by the age of 28. The bu ine s wa very succes ful , and h e re tired "well-off," as h e says. Then h e ch ose to become a bush p ilot in A la ka fo r six years, rece iving two commendations for re cue effo rts. He own ed anothe r manufacturing busines late r in Califo rnia, whe re h e worked full time and attended college part time. He suppo rted hi wife in her decision to return to school in nursing. When Smith's turn came, he ch ose Po rtland State with an eye to eventually becoming a phy ic ian 's ass istant. But in February he was diagn osed as h aving inoperable can cer. ow h e's h ome, but h e's n ot down for the count. "I 'm still planning to go on and get my ma ter's degree, if I can ." say Smith. "Giving up i a elf-fulfilling prophecy, and I don 't believe in it."
