Already, P U's STM is providing atomic-level information on the way some toxic substances are abs rbed in the environ– ment. Area high-tech researcher are interested in its uses in microcircuitry de ign and te ting. AccESSTO EDUCATION AND SERVICE ~ The fir t Nancy Ryles Scholar is Eleanor M. Dominguez, of Tigard, a single mother of three. Dominguez, a junior, want to be an elementary chool teacher. Th Nancy Ryle cholarship was established in 1990 to honor the late public official. ~ The Hatfield-Packwood Minority Scholarships (funded by local busine owner William R. Rees– man) awarded 2,000 grants to 12 minority tu– dent . For 1991-92, the program expanded to 15 tudents. The Council, which includes repre– sentation from engineering and high-tech firms a well a the in titutions involved, will promote in– creased integration of engineering programs; con– duct site planning and assessment for a proposed advanced engineering center in the metropolitan area; and develop additional funding re ource for OJGSE. 'i' Portland Educational Network (PEN)-a ervice network linking the educat ional efforts of the public school , community colleges, private in– titutions, the University, and local bu ine and community groups-was establi hed. PEN's aim is to encourage increased access, participation and ucce of students in the educational process by promoting cooperation among K-12 schools and po tsecondary education to increa e the percent– age of high chool graduates, and by encouraging more minority, place-bound, disadvantaged, and non-traditional student to take advantage of po tsecondary education. P U has assumed the leader hip role in the establi hment and operation of PEN. ·~· PSU was invited to join the Berkeley Mathe– matical Science Research In titute, a research center on the West Coast that is similar to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. PSU wi ll participate in activities of the Institute, and two graduate students each year will attend program in Berkeley. 'i' The University also joined the Advanced Sciences and Technology Institute, which show– cases research and promotes technology transfer from Oregon public universitie . i' A five-story, $11 million addition to the University's Branford Price Millar Library opened, nearly doubling the ize of the original building, which opened in 1968.
